Wendy Starland
Wendy Starland was "discovered" by James Brown's sax player, Maceo Parker, who spotted her in a crowd at a concert in Ithaca, New York and pulled her up on stage. The trombone player, hearing her singing along, put the microphone in front of her and let her wail. She scatted her own improvised song for twenty minutes and got a standing ovation. Her rave review in The Ithaca Times called her "the mystery diva in Maceo Parker's second set."
As a result her band "The Honey"
, which was sponsored for a time by fashion designer Donna Karan, was booked in every venue in Ithaca for the next few years while she continued her studies at Cornell during the day. She was the opening act for Shawn Colvin at Summer Stage in Prospect Park and for Grandmaster Flash on New Year's Eve at Roseland. The Disney Channel presented her as a featured performer at Miracle on Madison Avenue that exposed her to an audience of 80,000 people. Over the years, Wendy has been fortunate enough to work with amazing musicians and producers including, Gary Lyons, Nick Moroch and Jimmy Presiosi to name a few.
"My dream has always been to release a multi-platinum album of work that defines me as an innovative, artistic force in the music industry- by creating a fusion of rock, pop, jazz and world music," states Wendy. "I have strong ideas for live performance that are completely unconventional to how the audience has experienced a concert up until now."
Wendy has recently co-written a song with 9th Prince of KillArmy (of Wu Tang Clan) and is featured on the chorus while he raps on the verses. This song will be the first single on 9th Prince's debut s
