Leisur Hive, one of the most visceral, intense and interesting UK bands of the last decade, was first formed by Daniel Knowler and Maria Vellanz after a chance meeting 13 years after they first met as children. With Maria's punk-spirited enthusiasm and Dan's background in Suicide-esque rock band Proton Wedding, they began Leisur Hive as an attempt to fuse angular, percussive forms with intensely emotional songwriting. The line-up was solidified with the addition of longtime friends and collaborators Mark Bishop and Robert Allen (also of Australian noise duo Halo).
Leisur Hive's close-to-the-bone, emotional performances, echoing distorted soundscapes and throbbing, thunderous basslines have often been compared to such sonic individualists as Joy Division, Swans, Cop Shoot Cop and The Fall, but Leisur Hive remains solely focused on their own wayward path.
They have gained a reputation for their exhilarating, cathartic live shows across the UK and Europe.
In 2008 Leisur Hive released their fourth official studio album, 'The Soft Column', which brings to fruition the off-kilter sound of Leisur Hive's live performances and defines their aesthetic of merging slabs of growling rhythm with emotive shimmering songwriting.
Evil Aeroplane with scary distorted voices ramping up the fear. Great for horror productions, especially as a poor little baby fusses and cries in the last few seconds. Dynamite track and totally creepy! Great soundtrack for horror film or psycho madness. Spoken Word, Dangerous Music, Dark Music
Ethereal arabesque strings and snakey reverb-laden guitars snake themselves around a growling bass line and machine-like rhythm. Layers of haunting atmospheres swirling like fog around a distant factory. Eerie and disturbing yet strangely catchy. Male Vocals, Indie Rock Music, Experimental Rock
Raging train on the track and you're right in the headlights! Creepy frightening music and horrifying, clanging metal sound effects. Deluxe Horror Music for your spooky, threatening hot new freaky movie... Instrumental, Dangerous Music, Dark Music
A gently unfolding folk-noir song with low, understated vocals and minimalist, atmospheric slide guitar reminiscent of Morricone or Angelo Badalamenti's soundtrack work. Male Vocals, Indie Rock Music, Experimental Rock
Thunderous and infectious, Leisur Hive's "big" song from The Soft Column. Rolling primitive toms and grinding bass explode into a soaring chorus followed closely by swirling psyche-guitar effects. If The Strokes were more paranoid and psychedelic... Male Vocals, Indie Rock Music, Alternative Rock
A bursting breath and sparkling chords clash with stark stabbing drums. Dissonance and noise belie a gloriously loud pop hook which breaks apart only to build itself up into a spookier Pixies or a spikier Interpol. Perfect for tense, fast visual sequences. Male Vocals, Indie Rock Music, Alternative Rock
The creepy little sister of "Interval 1". The familiar melody swirls under layers of tape echo and stoic, funeral organs. Augmented by warm pianos and minimal percussion, this song generates a spooky, dense atmosphere while also keeping a sense of pop melody. Male Vocals, Indie Rock Music, Experimental Rock
A short spiky blast of tight, galloping rhythms, punky guitars and declamatory megaphone vocals. Big shards of off-kilter noise: the musical equivalent of a shower of rusty knives. On wheels. Instrumental, Indie Rock Music, Post-Punk
Thunderous ritualistic drumming and bold stately bass underly a dark psychedelic melody. Chiming sinous guitars tones and sampled textures. A slow yet bracing mix of post punk atmosphere and garage-rock attack. Male Vocals, Indie Rock Music, Post-Punk
A grinding, sleazy groove propelled by a chugging whopper of a bassline and slippery slide guitars. Layers of electronic effects and echo-laden violins add an uneasy sea-sickness to this monstrous racket. Like The Birthday Party playing Angelo Badalamenti's The Pink Room. Male Vocals, Indie Rock Music, Post-Punk
Big bold and throbbing with a dark yet catchy melodic line. Like a darker, more shadowy version of New York garage rock haunted by the ghosts of UK post-punk. An explosive ramshackle chorus bursts out like a drunken, out-of-control juggernaut veering off the highway. Male Vocals, Indie Rock Music, Post-Punk
Somewhere between The Birthday Party and Einsturzende Neubauten, this is a pounding, rocking, slab of rhthmic post-punk.. all solid angles, chaotic guitars and declamatory vocals. Just as the repetition builds to a trance-like state, it explodes into an epic post-rock crescendo. Male Vocals, Indie Rock Music, Post-Punk
Warm trip-hoppy grooves and subtle yet tense drones gradually build up to a chaotic crescendo of dissonant violins and shattered noise. Eerie melodies and spooky atmospherics give way to an epic finale. Male Vocals, Indie Rock Music, Alternative Rock
A pulsing, dynamic song with surreal lyrics and a chugging, tense rhythm which threatens to explode but holds back just enough to allow the dark atmosphere room to echo into the distance. Male Vocals, Indie Rock Music, Experimental Rock
Spacious dubby rhythms and distorted cascading strings. A low slung moody and experimental production; but somewhere beneath the disintigrating samples lurks a canny, infectious pop song. Male Vocals, Indie Rock Music, Indie Rock
The loud/quiet dynamic of classic alt-rock twisted into new shapes by Leisur Hive's thumping tribal rhythms, layers of alien sound and terse echoing vocals. Early Swans meets Voivod! Male Vocals, Indie Rock Music, Post-Punk
Rolling toms and chainsaw guitars thunder on relentlessly dragging broken melodies and a deceptively uplifting chorus with them into the desert. Discipline and chaos fighting for space in this big, bold post-punk noise.. You know there is no control... Male Vocals, Indie Rock Music, Post-Punk
A slowly building, epic drone-rock cityscape of crumbling textures, dissonant yet bluesy guitar tones and industrious percussion which shape-shifts into a maximalist, intoxicating mantra of Mogwai-esque proportions. Male Vocals, Indie Rock Music, Experimental Rock
