I spent my Christmas Eve on 55 to St. Louis
taking toys and candy canes to stores 
for folks that didn't plan ahead for Christmas
And then I headed back to St. Charles
And your lovin' arms
Because I had my own plans.

I'd been working overtime since Easter Sunday
taking any run that came my way
to buy you that big ring
And then on Christmas it would be underneath the tree
And you'd marry me.

But when I walked into our house on Christmas morning
and I saw that pile of clothes discarded underneath the tree
a big red parka, and your blouse
and milk and cookies scattered everywhere
I just knew you were getting jolly with an elf that wasn't me.

Have you got a glow about you because it's Christmas?
Is that mistletoe above your head?
Are those sleigh tracks in the snow
on the driveway of our home?
And are those Santa's boots under your bed?
