Music from Mexico: Son Jarocho de Tlacotalpan provides an introduction to the music of southern Veracruz, the hot and humid tropical state on Mexico's Gulf coast, via examples recorded in the town of Tlacotalpan, home of a wonderfully vibrant traditional music scene.
Son and Son Jarocho
Son, roughly speaking, is the folk music of central and southern Mexico. The genre manifests itself in a variety of ways depending upon the area one chooses to explore. Certain features are shared across the board, however, and justify the use of the umbrella term. Son, for example, is primarily a vocal-based music sung typically in four-line rhyming stanzas, noted for its lyrical improvisation and accompanied by stringed instruments and the occasional percussion instrument. Rhythmically, the son is played in triple meter, 3/4 or 6/8, and is usually accompanied in public performance by the zapateo, a dance technique usually performed upon a wooden platform which accentuates the playing of the musicians.
