Stephen Lamson is a gifted classical composer with an ear for the bold and sublime. In the words of Mr. Lamson: "La Guerre is a journey we all take. It is about conflict, hope and resolve. When I began composing the various melodies and phrases that make up La Guerre, the Persian Gulf War was smoldering. 1990-91 was a difficult time for many of us, filled with anxiety and fear of the unknown. As the piece begins, there is the "fate motif" opening theme, which windw in and out of the entire symphony, sometimes only in small segments."
"There are themes with an Eastern flavor and hints of triumph as in a "march form", yet it's not clear what this triumph will really mean until the very conclusion of the work. Jack G. Graves has done a masterful job of arranging and orchestrating this piece for me and I know he too has left a part of himself within its measures. La Guerre is not an easy work to perform, with its many key changes, various tempos and mood swings. The Kirland Orchestra, under the direction of R. Joseph Scott, played wonderfully, and I thank them for their support. Premiering an extensive and brand new work like La Guerre is not an easy task."
