Parry Home: Bournemouth, Hampshire England Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry (1848 – 1918) was an English composer, probably best known for his setting of William Blake's poem, "Jerusalem", the coronation anthem "I Was Glad" and the hymn tune "Repton" which sets the words Dear Lord and Father of Mankind. While a student at Eton, Parry took music lessons from George Elvey. The instruction was so successful that Parry earned a Bachelor’s of Music from Oxford at age 18. After graduation, he worked for three years as a clerk at the insurance company of Lloyds of London.
