DESCRIPTION: Son, and Son Jarocho, is the folk music of central and southern Mexico. The genre manifests itself in a variety of ways depending upon the area one chooses to explore. Certain features are shared across the board, however, and justify the use of the umbrella term. Son, for example, is primarily a vocal-based music sung typically in four-line rhyming stanzas, noted for its lyrical improvisation and accompanied by stringed instruments and the occasional percussion instrument.
