This is one of my favourite symphonies because of the musical wit Beethoven displays. At the time he was deaf and trying to come to terms with this. He continued to conduct but his conducting wasn't always in time and the orchestra followed the leader. Various passages in the symphony are heard by some listeners to be musical jokes. As with various other Beethoven works such as the Opus 27 piano sonatas, the symphony deviates from Classical tradition in making the last movement the weightiest of the four.
This shows a sense of humour that Beethoven had. I have tried to bring this out in my arrangement. It should make you smile. However this is not slapstick but great humour.
