Lyrics:
It was 1968…

The Orient Express (321st) The Orient Express (321st)
Time and again, this war without end…not today.

We were hauling those explosives, 20 tons each day at dawn
With locked and loaded M-16’s, the rigs leave for Saigon.
Long Binh to Mekong Delta, on to Tay Ninh now, he said
The black smoke blowin’ out each stack, stray rounds close overhead.

It was 1968…

The Orient Express (321st) The Orient Express (321st)
Time and again, this war without end…not today.

20 more long miles, Chu Chi is our next stop.
Did the mine sweepers find ‘em all, or did Charlie put some back?
If we’d only known their tunnel place, but we would never see ‘em
What once was just below our nose is now a war museum.

It was 1968…

The Orient Express (321st) The Orient Express (321st)
Time and again, this war without end…not today.

The coast is clear, we hit that dusty blown up jungle road
But can’t let down our guard at all, the ambushes forebode.

We’d take our cover, anywhere, sometimes behind decaying bodies,
that lined the road for miles on end, you know that smell, as well as hell.

It was 1968…

The Orient Express (321st) The Orient Express (321st)
Time and again, this war without end…not today.

A friend of mine, he couldn’t take the pressure, so he stayed
behind to keep the camp in shape, Nine months until the day
He had to go, his only trip, our drivers’ numbers shrinking,
that convoy was my 300th, I did them without blinking.

Then Charlie hit us hard, my friend lost all his self control,
They captured him, tortured in chains, 5 years without his soul.

It was 1968…

The Orient Express (321st) The Orient Express (321st)
Time and again, this war without end…not today.

I guess the moment hits me most, that one convoy I missed,
My CO took me from my truck, to sick call, he’d insist.
They picked a guy to take my place, he sat behind my wheel,
15 minutes, my truck blown up, the ultimate raw deal.

It’s now been more than 40 years since that was my life’s calling,
The guns, the RPG’s, and watching my friends falling.
The memories are so far back, time heals our wounds, they say,
But I can bring those those memories back, as if it’s yesterday.

It was 1968…

The Orient Express (321st) The Orient Express (321st)
Time and again, this war without end…not today.
