Real Good Friends

With an idea in our heads/A pad of paper on the table
With old guitars resting on our knees
We talk about direction, sometimes we sit in silence
Strum some chords and hum a melody

A song is slowly born and a bond between us grows
As we labor over every word
We struggle to get it right night after night
Hoping someday our song will be heard

We write and write and write
Then we write it all over again
I'm not making any money
But I'm making some real good friends

In between the lines we talk about our lives
We cover all the lows and the highs
We laugh about our funky cars/Cry about our broken hearts
Help each other out when money's tight

When our song is finally done and it all comes down to fate
We pack up our guitars and say goodnight
And it always occurs to me as I drive off down the street
These friends are the songs of my life

We write and write and write
Then we write it all over again
I'm not making any money
But I'm making some real good friends
