“The Making of Amadeus (2002)” Documentary

(From Jan 7, 2014 entry at www.Facebook.com/AudioSparx)

In honoring Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) and his music, we discovered “The Making of  Amadeus (2002),” and think you’ll greatly enjoy watching dynamic interviews with Director Miloš Forman, his Screenwriter Peter Shaffer, Musical Director Sir Neville Marriner, Costume Designer Theodor Pištěk, Choreographer Twyla Tharp, and the leading stars of the award-winning 1984 film. For over a year, they auditioned approximately 1,400 actors for the movie, trying to find the perfect personalities to portray Mozart (Tom Hulsey), Salieri (J. Murray Abraham), Mozart’s wife Constanze (Elizabeth Berridge) and his father Leopold (Roy Dotrice), plus all the other key roles.

Mozart created over 600 compositions during his short lifetime -- writing his first concerto at 4, first symphony at 7, and his first full opera at 12... This documentary highlights his genius and the complications of breaking new ground while having to satisfy the Emperor and the Aristocracy... But we don't want to spoil it for you...

The film was nominated for 53 awards and won 40 (including eight Oscars and "Best Picture"), and is considered a 20th Century Cinema Classic. The film was shot in Prague while it was still a Soviet Bloc country, and everything had to be brought in from other countries or built on the spot. Try to imagine how you would work with a cast of 500 – creating everything from big wigs, period ballgowns, puffy shirts, velvet britches, and tons of plumage, etc. -- with hours-long makeup and costume sessions to age the actors as the film progressed. Working with 1,000's of burning candles to recreate credible 18th Century interior sets, potential disaster was always just around the corner. Hope you enjoy this masterful tour de force…
