Activating an R-Box Pearl Hardware Device (Quick Start Instructions)

To get your R-Box Pearl up and playing music quickly, follow these steps below.

Connect Your R-Box

1.  Access Player Settings -- Login to your RadioSparx account and access the Player Settings screen for the RadioSparx account, subaccount, or user account for which you want to activate the R-Box Pearl.

2.  Enter Device ID and Select R-Box Player Type -- On the Player Settings screen, enter the Device ID from the barcode label on the bottom of the R-Box into the Device ID field.  Then change the Player Type field to "R-Box", and save the changes by clicking the SAVE CHANGES button at the top right of the window.

3.  Plug In the R-Box Pearl -- The R-Box Pearl must be connected to various things to work properly.  Plug in the R-Box to following:

  • Monitor/Mouse/Keyboard - Connect the R-Box to a monitor using the included HDMI cable.  While you can use the remote control device in lieu of a mouse and keyboard, it is cumbersome to use, and we recommend instead that you connect a USB mouse and USB keyboard. These connections are necessary during the initial setup of your R-Box so that you can configure the Security Token value from the Player Settings screen of the RadioSparx user account, and to also configure Wi-Fi if you're using this as your network connectivity method.

  • Electric Power - If you're using the R-Box outside the USA, make sure to use the appropriate electrical power adapter on the US-format plug to adapt your power cord to your local electrical plug format.

  • Network - Your network connection can be made via an ethernet cable or Wi-Fi.  If you use an ethernet network cable, no network configuration is required (presuming your network supports DHCP automatic IP number assignment).  If you instead use a Wi-Fi connection, you will generally need to configure the Wi-Fi password for your local Wi-Fi hotspot.  Wi-Fi settings can be accessed on the R-Box under Settings, Network (in Device section), then click on Wi-Fi, turn on Wi-Fi, then click on the appropriate hotspot and enter the Wi-Fi password corresponding to that hotspot.

  • Stereo - Make sure to use the original audio cable that comes with the R-Box Pearl package.  You can't simply instead use an audio-only cord that has only a stereo mini-phone plug on one end, it will not work - you will likely hear nothing (i.e. no audio signal at all) or you may hear an audio signal that includes a loud audio hum mixed in with the signal.

4.  Configure Authentication Settings - After you have connected everything as listed above, and stereo, click on the R-Box Pearl icon from the player's desktop icon screen to access the R-Box software.  Then click in the upper-right corner of the software on the three vertical dots, and click on the following:

  • Device ID - Make sure the Device ID matches the Device ID value on the bottom of your R-Box, and that it also matches the value that is configured for the RadioSparx user account that will utilize this R-Box (from the RadioSparx website, under Account, under Player Settings, or for a specific user, under Account, Users, Player Settings for a specific user account).  If it does not match, correct the Device ID to match the value on the sticker on the bottom of the R-Box, and correct the Device ID setting in the user account as well.

  • Security Token - Enter the Security Token value from the Player Settings screen and save it.
5.  Update Software - After configuring the authentication info in the previous step, right-click with your mouse to return to the R-Box main screen.  Then click the three dots in the upper-right corner one more time and click on the UPDATE option.  This will cause the software to download and upgrade itself to the latest available version of the software.  Then going forward, the software will automatically update itself any time a new version of the software is released.

6.  Test Playback - After the software updates, click on the PLAY button from the main screen of the R-Box software and the Pop Vocal station should commence playing immediately in streaming mode.

7.  Schedule Your Music -- Configure the desired music to play via the Custom Schedule feature.  By default, the R-Box Pearl plays in streaming mode, but by accessing the "Advanced Settings" section of your Custom Schedule settings screen, you can change the operational mode to use Store-and-Forward instead.

Automatic Play

The R-Box Pearl is engineered to be a non-stop music player, so when you reboot the device, it will automatically begin playing after the reboot.  It tries to always play music as much as possible to require minimal human intervention.

To make it stop playing at night time, simply configure a "Stop Event" for your Custom Schedule to take effect at a particular time of night, and when that time arrives and the last song finishes, the R-Box will go into sleep mode and begin a countdown of the hours and minutes until the next configured music event for the following morning arrives, and then it will automatically resume playback.

Player Monitoring

By default, in both streaming and store-and-forward modes, the R-Box periodically sends a signal to the web server to inform that it is active and playing.  The required upstream traffic for this is negligible and provides the capability for you to monitor all of your R-Box players via the monitoring system of RadioSparx.

In store-and-forward mode, if your Internet service happens to go down for some time period, the R-Box will not be able to connect to the server to report its status, and hence a "down player" alert may occur on the monitoring system.  However, since in store-and-forward mode the R-Box plays music from the files that are stored locally on the R-Box, there will be no music interruption and nobody in the store / restaurant / service location will even realize the Internet is down.  For a business environment, this is ideal, hence it is highly recommended that you utilize the store-and-forward mode at all times.

Custom Ads

If desired, you can also upload and configure Custom Ads -- they work fine in both streaming and store-and-forward modes.
