We first wrote about Australian playwright S. Shakthidharan's groundbreaking work, "Counting and Cracking," just before its 2019 world premiere by Sydney's celebrated Belvoir St Theatre Company. Since then, "Counting and Cracking," has received widespread acclaim, winning seven 2019 Helpmann Awards including Best Play and Best New Australian Work, Best Mainstage Production at the 2019 Sydney Theatre Awards, the Victorian Prize for Literature, and the Victorian Premier's Prize for Drama at the 2020 Victorian Premier's Literary Awards, and the Nick Enright Prize for Playwriting at the New South Wales Premier's Literary Awards. Had theater not come to a halt in 2020, there's no telling what other accolades would have been bestowed on this epic work.
Talented Bangalore Composer and Producer SUCHITRA LATA's beautiful Raga, "PURVIKALYANI-GNANAMUSAGARADA", provides a rich, authentic Indian Music score for the first 1:50 of this interview and profile with the playwright, which aired on Australia's Public Broadcast Service program, "The Mix": Purvikalyani-Gnanamusagarada
Spanning four generations of one family, "Counting and Cracking" is a sweeping Australian story like none before, a "story of love and political strife, of home and exile, of parents and children". Like the playwright's family, "Counting and Cracking" will endure, and when live theater returns it will rise to once again tell its magnificent tale.
