Does My Music Earn Streaming Mechanical Royalties?

Q.  Does My Music Earn Streaming Mechanical Royalties?

A.   Yes!  For the playback of your music on streaming DSP decks such as Spotify, Amazon Music, and many other leading music sites, you will earn streaming mechanical royalties.  This type of royalty is relatively new ,and is different than traditional public performance royalties.

In the US, steaming mechanical royalties are administered by The Mechanical Licensing Collective (i.e. The MLC for short), which was just launched in early 2021.  The collect such royalties from the DSP and from reciprocal foreign "sister" societies, and then pay out the royalties for the composers and publishers of each song.

AudioSparx works with The MLC to facilitate these earnings for our vendor/composers for whom we administer publishing.  If AudioSparx is administering your publishing, then in line with standard responsibilities of publishing administrators, we will by default collect 100% of the streaming mechanical earned from The MLC and post your share to your earnings account here.  You will earn the full composer’s share of such earnings (i.e. 50% out of a 100% pie) and AudioSparx will earn the publisher’s share (i.e. the other 50% out of the 100% pie).

If you already previously delegated your publishing administration to AudioSparx, you do not have to do anything to make it happen, we’re doing all the work here to enable this new earnings stream for you going forward. This process does require registration of your tracks with SESAC since The MLC sources their track level data from SESAC's core track database.  Hence, AudioSparx handles this registration process with SESAC, as advised by The MLC, to provide The MLC the necessary track information to facilitate their collection and payout of royalties.

If you're not opted-in to have AudioSparx administer your publishing, please consider opting in here, or to learn more about this topic, please read this KB article:  Publishing Administration, Performance Royalties, and Mechanical Royalties Issues.
