Calypso music is a festive, upbeat style of Afro-Caribbean music which originated in Trinidad and Tobago, in the West Indies, which incorporates musical traditions from Africa and Europe. This Afro-Cuban dance genre, similar to Salsa and Rumba, was popular during the 1940's and 50's and became part of the big band sound of the 1950s. Performed by the Cuban conjunto, it included an ensemble of voice, trumpets, and rhythm sections. The rhythm sections would include a bass, conga, and timbale or cowbell.
