Prayer used to be a shopping list of all my wants and needs
Or like a 911 call for some emergency
And when I didn’t get the answers I was hoping for
Couldn’t see the reason to pray much anymore
But when I reached the point of nowhere else to turn
Said okay Lord I’m listening and it was like I heard

 Prayer’s not a backup plan
 A list of your demands
 It’s not heaven’s vendin’ machine
 It’s talkin’ with your best friend
 Spendin’ time listenin’ 
 Why wait ‘till you break down to tell God how you feel
 Prayer’s not the spare tire it’s the steering wheel     

I’ve learned I can’t always expect God’s answer to be yes
That sometimes when I get a no well it can mean not yet
And no matter what the outcome I know I’m not alone
‘Cause any time I wanna talk I’ve got a place to go 
I pray a lot more often since I’ve learned what it’s about
I’m headed in the right direction since I figured out
