HOUSE ON FIRE

they had broken things to mend
and many bills to pay
that piled up on a desk
while they roll in the hay
see their bodies perspire
in a house on fire

the floorboards were creaking
the faucets were leaking
the box springs were squeaking 
and did all the speaking
hear their words of desire
in a house on fire

and the billowing smoke filled the hallways
and the whispers of love uttered “always”
and the crackling sound of the fire raged on
enraptured in love, they were already gone

the sound of alarms
and their fever grew stronger
they stayed in the bedroom 
but not for much longer
and were slowly consumed by an unrelenting, mad desire
and their passion was burned down to ashes
