Someone drew a picture of your God
In a compromising situation.
Maybe he was doing ungod-like things
Or having ungodly relations.
Suddenly you’re everywhere,
Yelling and shouting on the streets,
Threatening to cut off peoples’ hands:
I’m sick and tired of your stupid bleats

If your God’s so fragile,
Maybe you need a new one.
If he’s so easy to knock down
Maybe you should find a different God.

I’m not just talking to the Muslims,
I’m talking to the Christians too,
With your ancient laws of blasphemy,
Telling artists what they can and can not do.
Some of you run around yelling,
“My God’s better than yours.”
Some of you even spend all day
Knocking on other peoples’ doors.

If your God needs marketing,
Maybe you need a new one.
If he can’t do it for himself
Maybe you should find a different God.

An old man in the Lebanon,
Sitting outside his shack,
Looks up at the fighter planes
And wishes he could send them back. (A shiver of fear runs down his back)
Somewhere down in India
A little girl just died;
Blown to bits in a railway train,
For being on the wrong damned side.

If your God’s such a coward
Maybe you need a new one.
If he has to hide behind guns and bombs
Maybe you should find a different God.


A bunch of men in Orange
Marching through a Catholic town.
What’s the point of all that fuss?
Why throw the gauntlet down?
It’s open provocation,
Asking for a fight.
Even if it means that two little boys
Burn alive in their beds tonight.

If your God’s so bigoted
Maybe you need a new one.
If he cares so little for human life,
Why do you think he gives a damn about yours?

Hey, listen to me, I’m preaching.
I sound as bad as you.
But there’s a great big difference:
I  decide what I should do.
No-one minds you having a God:
Everybody needs a crutch.
But if it’s so easy to knock it away,
What good is it? Not Much!

If your God’s so fragile,
Maybe you need a new one.
If it’s so easy to knock him down
Maybe you should find yourself…. a different God.
