The City and the Sky

Cabs and crowds and smoke and noise
The summer turned the heat on high
Reds and greens and cops and clocks
The traffic will not let us by

Plants and shoes and books and bars
The shops serve to distract us
Streets and turns and lines and fines
Someone left a parking place

From high up, above these towers in the sky
This frenzy’s part of a pattern in an 
Evening in July
The City and the Sky
And stillness deep inside

Windows, doors and moving floors
The party is ten stories high
Drinks and joints and forks and food
I’m thinking with my mouthful

Gays and straights and in betweens
The battles of the sexes
Hands and shoes and breasts and feet
We’re dancing to the rock and roll

From high up, like looking through and airplane’s eye
This party’s part of a pattern in an evening in July
The City and the Sky
