Lyrics:
Among The Heirlooms
Among the heirlooms I found a box with pretty flowers painted on the lid
Inside were pictures and a lock of long blond hair
Neatly braided with so much care and medals of war between the pictures hid
So I asked my grandmother who, when, how and where
She said “back in 02 your father went to war in a place called Afghanistan
Fighting terrorism which we now no longer fear
He died there fighting and your mother had a plan to carry on where he left of and to bring him back
So she joined the Army and they sent her to Iraq”
CHO
Among the heirlooms we find the fabric of our lives
Hidden in the corners of dusty attics they reside
They tell our story in such quiet history
Among the heirlooms – there are no mysteries
She said, “There was a war in Iraq as well – twas fought to rid the world of terrorist acts
And it was on the streets of Baghdad where your mother fell”
She said, “ Mom had my picture kept closely by her breast and there it stayed when we laid them down to rest – and it was your grandfather who brought them both back.”
Well they cared for me all the while for I was very, very young
To young to know the reasons or the why’s
I knew them only from those pictures and those medals that they won
I guess it’s made me very, very wise.
