Raizes do Fado (Roots of Fado), from Latin fatum, or 'fate', is the typical urban vocal music of cafes, cabarets and night clubs. Theories about its origin conflict. One theory maintains that it was originally a maritime song style before becoming popular during the 19th century in Lisbon. According to another theory its roots are in the Moorish or Arabic tradition. Even South African influences have been found to exist in the case of a certain style of dance-songs.
