Mahesh Jayawardana's songs "Kavikar" and "Hamuwuna," which he composed and sang, topped the television and radio hit charts in Sri Lanka. He also wrote the theme song for Poppy Day in Sri Lanka titled "Poppy Malak," and it was sung by 27 singers including Amerasiri Peiries, Edward Jayakody, Keethi Pasquel, T. M. Jayaratne, Latha Walpola, Bathiya, and Santhush. Mahesh created his first theme song for the "Avurudu Kumariya" program, with lyrics by Nilar N. Cassim, and has since created themes for the program for five consecutive years.
