Advice and Link to Beautiful Asian Vocal Samples
By Julian Scott

There are 2 ways with voices using samples – virtual instruments where you can play what you want (don’t know of any libraries with a virtual eastern singer) or samples – these sound great but in my experience the song has to be modelled round the sample to fit the tempo (if it has one) and of course the key.

Nevertheless they can be very effective.

My India type stuff has been done with a real singer but I have used an old Spectrasonic release “Vocal Planet” which can give good results also perhaps try this site here, but I don’t have first hand experience of this one.

With the younger artists why not see if they have someone at a local music college who sings in an eastern vein – it’s always worth trying – and then it’s more unique – and perhaps original. One of the problems with really good samples is that they can get used a lot so if you model a song around them it can actually sound like someone else’s work.

Just a hint if using samples try pitch changing or editing fragments of multiple samples together to change the original and bring something new to the table.
