Manner Magic

Something strange happened in school one time
The teacher said we’d learn magic-not the regular kind
It wouldn’t be the tricks I usually liked
You know, you choosin a card, me guessin it right
We all wondered what the teacher had on her mind.
As the class all sat, her first trick she began
Teacher said don’t shout out, raise your hand
Try to remember we have  two ears
When we take turns  then everyone hears
In a flash, we started to understand.

As the teacher waved her wand there was no “hocus pocus”
“You’re welcome” and “excuse me” were the words she told us
I expected  words like “alacazoo”
But the teacher’s magic words were “please” and “thank you”
As the smoke all cleared, I had learned a thing or two.

It was time for lunch but the class all begged for more
We were told to be polite just hold the door
As we went to go eat, no one shoved or pushed
Alacazam! In line no one got squooshed
Wow! We had more manners than we had before.

When I got home, I told my mom about school
