By examining the sources of hatred we gain the tools to make positive change., Linq wrote this song shortly after reading about the savage beating of a black gay musician in New York City by four young men between the ages of 16 and 20. Witnesses reported hearing them yell both racial and homophobic slurs during the attack. It brought to mind the earlier beating and subsequent death of gay college student Matthew Shepard, who was left to die hanging from a fence by the two young men who had beaten him.
