Flute, birds, Traditionally a high pitched ensemble instrument, but now being prized as a bass, solo flute, the Moseno flute hails from the canton of Mohosa in Bolivia. The unique construction of this fipple flute, with it's external mouthpiece pipe, enables this wind instrument to be played. Byzantine paintings from as early as the 10th Century portray a transverse flute, often played to the left instead of to the right. Bronzes and wall paintings from this period also show evidence of the existence of transverse flutes. These early examples more closely resemble fifes than they do our modern conception of the flute.
