Some Character to some. Richard Mauto is the youngest out of a family of eight. He started writing music in the late nineties while completing his "O" Levels. For him back then, it was all for fun and making jokes out of his fellow classmates and some of his teachers. After relocating to the United Kingdom in 2000, he saw an opportunity to further his love for hip-hop as a career.
Of all the names he could have chosen to go by as a stage name, he chose Zimbaland. He explains, "The name Zimbaland is a reminder of where I'm from and represents the struggle of both me and the Zimbabwean people back home and across the world. I speak for my people through the music, it's not just my music - it's our music as Zimbabweans and it's what we listen to. We live it." It wasn't all smiles in the beginning since his music was refused distribution in Zimbabwe back in 2001 and later on in 2005 because of its political and protest content. However, it did not stop him from writing. Now a writer/ rapper, producer and C.E.O of Zimbaland records, Zimbaland sets the pace for all contenders to come. "My music is for both the current generation and more to come, that's why some tracks are good and some bad for you - It's not me being shallow but it's a generation thing. If atrack don't suit your liking skip to the one that suits you.
