Holiday Songs -- Public Domain or Not?
If you're considering producing a remake or cover version of any Christmas song, please make sure to check the list below first to make sure the song you're planning to produce is in the public domain. 

Please Note:  You cannot purchase a mechanical license from Harry Fox for just any song, then create your own version and then license your version out for some type of commercial use, sync license, or similar.  For commercial licensing, the publishing rights must first be cleared with publisher or copyright holder.  A license from Harry Fox is a limited license which primarily allows releasing the new song through consumer music listening channels (e.g. Spotify et al) but does not authorize commercial sub-licensing / re-licensing of the composition.  This is why public domain songs work so well, because you do not have to license the composition from anybody, you an use it at will already.
