WHEN PHONE CALLS COST A DIME

On a lazy Sunday afternoon, I took a walk downtown
A voice behind me said “how's it goin'?” and I politely turned around
But a man was talkin' on a cell phone pressed tightly against his ear
And he quickly passed me right on by like I wasn't even there

          Back when phone calls cost a dime, not all that long ago
          We walked down to the corner store to call and say “hello”
          Folks treated you like somebody they would like to know
          And the good life was easy to find, when phone calls cost a dime 

I went to work Monday mornin' and to my second job Monday night
And don't mind the extra hours, but something just don't seem right
I have two kids, a nice home and couldn't ask for a better wife 
But there's so little time left over for me to be a part of their life 

          Back when phone calls cost a dime, not all that long ago
          At the end of a hard days work, folks took it nice and slow
          Kids laughed and played together as parents watched 'em grow
          Yeah, the good life was easy to find, when phone calls cost a dime 

Today we're all wired in and globally connected
Texted, Inspected, dissected and rejected
While those we hold most dear to our hearts
Are far too often, just neglected 

          Back when phone calls cost a dime, not all that long ago
          Folks sat out on the front porch as the sun was sinkin' low 
          Friends stopped to talk face to face and had a lotta love to show 
          And the good life was easy to find, when phone calls cost a dime 

          Yeah, we often struggled to get by but it was such an easier time
          To find some true peace of mind, when phone calls cost a dime
