TOMBSTONE (male)


Tombstone, in the year of 1885,
was a bad place to be (in)
if you wanted to stay alive.
There were tricksters, card-sharps,
and thieves by the score;
murderers, conmen - and many a whore.

Then came the day when
I rode into town -
on a white stallion
and when the people looked around
they saw a handsome man
who wore a sheriff’s star,
who’d cleaned up many a place
with my quick fire Winchester.  

I was your hero, your champion
with shoulders broad and strong; 
at night I’d play the guitar
and sing you a cowboy song:
by day I’d face down 
some evil outlaw gang,
to everyone I was just -
the bravest, bravest man.

But now my six guns are holstered
and hanging on the wall.
The lonely nights are drawing in
as summer turns to fall.
You’ve laid out your silver spurs
and brushed down my Stetson hat –
even though you know I’m never,
never coming back -
even though you know I’m never,
never coming back.
 
I was the fastest man
that they’d ever seen draw;
and within just one year
I’d laid down the law.
Tombstone then was a safe place
for us all to live –
you became my lover –
I had so much more to give. 
 
I was your hero, your champion

by day I’d face down 
some evil outlaw gang,

But then a bunch of cowards
that I could not see,
put down a deadly ambush
as I walked along the street:
they shot me from behind
and tore us apart:
I died in your arms –
a bullet through my heart.
