“Reel Montauk,” John Barrett’s nostalgic documentary as narrated by local historian Tom Bogdan and Dallas Greene, offers up a rich slice of history that recalls a cast of eccentric characters and colorful stories about this fun summer playground and surfing mecca located in East Hampton, NY, on the eastern tip of Long Island. We learn about the thriving fishing industry, and how three branches of the military arrived and set up shop during WWII, plus how surfer-crazed kids arrived in the 60's. John's story includes tavern brawls and annual festivals, the Blessing of the Fleet, and even a Shark Tournament!!! As favorite clubs and restaurants are fondly remembered, apropos to the fun and casual lifestyle of Montauk, the film closes with a wild night of karaoke at the Liars' Saloon.
This feel-good film includes everything from animation, cartoons, and drawings, to original music and home movies showing friends surfing, swimming, and marching in parades. We also see the amazing nature dunes and Suse Lowenstein's life-size sculptures in her healing sculpture garden -- and even learn of secret military projects conducted on the island well into the 1980s. Amidst the changing history of Montauk, the one recurring theme is of special summers where friends and families gathered to enjoy vacations, parties, and special events at this legendary East Coast getaway.
AudioSparx is honored that John Barrett licensed these four composers' tracks for his charming and memorable story of special times spent on the sandy beaches and waterways of Montauk:
--Jeremy Sherman: Lonesome Cowboy (Full Length Version)
--Gary Wolk: Ride the Tide
--Nicolas Croll: Sparkling Surf
--Matthew Reid: Wicked Awesome 2000s Electronica
We think you'll greatly enjoy this optimistic -- and often hilarious -- view of the Past, Present, and Future for Montauk.
